Susie and I welcome you to our seventh on farm Bull sale. We started Glendhu
Shorthorns in 1995 and today the herd is made up of 85 Stud cows. This makes us the
largest registered Shorthorn Stud in the South Island.
We have a clear breeding emphasis at Glendhu on producing structurally sound bulls
that are soft, easy doing with good temperament. EBV play a vital role in our selection as
we aim to have moderate birth sires with good growth, high muscle, IMF and fat, while
maintaining the strong maternal attributes of the Shorthorn breed.
In 2023 we had 44 Bull calves born. The Bulls have been run in one mob from weaning.
They went onto crop on the 10th of May 2024 and after the wettest September since
1972 we had to leave them on crop to the 10th of October 2024 (150 days). They all ran
together until February 2025 to we selected the best 24 bulls.
I believe this selection pressure has made this years crop of sale Bulls the best we have
ever offered. The best bulls have made their way to the front of the pack and can give
any buyer confidence. For the past 10 years we have selected high muscle bulls and I
strongly believe under challenging climatic conditions these cattle hold their condition
so much better. The Bulls with the strong performance data have stood out after a long
winter. Its always easy to hide whats under the skin with feed. Our eye muscle scanning
continues to lift each year and we have made huge strides with our IMF data lifting as
well. As a result we offer bulls we consider as high as any in NZ for Genotype.
Our 2025 sale bulls are sired by three sires.
This is Hinewaka Anzaz 81/19 second crop of bulls and he was used as our herd sire
over our cows. Sired by an Australian Bull Yamburgan Anzac L278 he was a bull we
purchased for his power with outstanding data to support him. His data we believe is
as good as you can get and now supported by high accuracies: Top 1% (400Days and
600Days), top 10 % (200Days, EMA, Milk and IMF), top 25% (FATS). Although he has
great growth what we are impressed by is the moderate heavy muscled bulls he has
bred. They have incredible weights for moderate framed animals. We have just weaned
his first crop of daughters and they have fantastic milking ability so we think he will be
a good female breeder as well. Our heifers have weaned the highest raw data weight
calves we have had since we started breeding.
Browns Unique 02/19 is a bull we used as a heifer bull 2 years ago. We leased him
out for a mating but after viewing his progeny we got him back! We mated him to the
R3 cows and he has 4 cracking sons in the sale. He is a moderate birth Bull with good
growth and outstanding carcase data. His sons have a huge amount of thickness and
scanned really high for IMF. They are moderate framed bulls who won’t be massive but
are so easy doing and soft.
Hinewaka Rembrandt was used exclusively over the R2 Heifers. Calving ease and low
birth have been the features that have stood out for him and he is supported by strong
growth and carcase data.
3 Years ago we were lucky enough to have 2 Bulls selected for the NZ Shorthorn progeny
test run by Beef and Lamb in the North Island. The first results have our bulls placed 1st
and 4th for weaning weight. I have included this on the next page. We will watch with
interest on how Shorthorns and in particular our bulls perform against the best of the
Angus and Hereford Bulls in NZ in a commercial environment.
Selecting 16 bulls from 44 has been extremely difficult and caused much headaches
for myself this year! I hope you can come along and view our bulls and see where our
breeding programme is heading.
Our herd is C10 and sale tested clear, all Bulls have been BVD tested negative
and have been vaccinated.
Thanks
